Water Safety and Drowning Stats
Tuesday, July 13, 2021
Summer is heating up and the officers and members of the American Legion Ambulance would like to provide you with the following statistics and safety information regarding safe swimming activities. The month of July is annually the most dangerous month for drownings nationwide. We would also like to caution parents on the use of the popular swimming accessory known as Mermaid Swim Fins. These devices wrap around an individual's legs and feet to give the illusion of looking like a mermaid in the pool, beach, lake, etc. however, due to them being wrapped around the legs and feet, they have been known to restrict an untrained individual's ability to swim by up to 70%. The Mermaid Swim Fins do have built-in safety features but if an individual is unfamiliar with said features the risk of drowning is increased. Due to the increased risk of drowning, the devices have been banned in many public swimming areas. We ask that all of you please be safe, use good judgment and have fun this Summer!
